Preparatory study: Biddle and Fielding record a study measuring 20 by 17 inches for a large painting of Portia and Shylock, which, begun in June 1835, was abandoned (no. 2515)
Initialed and dated in lower left corner of bond: "T. S. 1835." Inscribed at top of bond, which, as held, is rotated 90 degrees to the right: "MDXXII / Bond / Gratiano / Shylock." In 1976, the conservator Robert Scott Wiles recorded the following on the reverse of the lining fabric, where it had been copied during a previous restoration: "Portia ... Be merciful. Take thrice thy money. Bid me tear the bond. Shylock-When it is paid according to the tenour. vide Merchant of Venice Act 4 Scene 1 ??1835."
