Summary
Turned goblet of finished wood is lined and rimmed with silver. Each bowl has a single unmarked escutcheon in silver, 1" x1", and each foot has a silver time. Carved with neck molding at the junction of the stem and bowl.
Note
Certification: inscribed on silver rim, "Made from a piece of Shakespeare's mulberry tree by Mr. Sharpe [sic] silversmith [sic] Stratford on Avon." The mark of Thomas Sharp's die stamp is not visible. When used, the name is spelled, "Sharp." He was known as a clock and watchmaker and not as a silversmith. See copy of Sharp's affidavit concerning the mulberry wood found on p. 27 of the manuscript by J. G. von Herder, Aristotle and Shakespeare...ca. 1861, which identifies his occupation. Bought as having a London hall-mark, 1797, but neither goblet has a place mark and cannot be dated. The maker's mark is not clear. It may end in an, r. The 3 remaining marks are, reading left to right--the king's head, the lion passant, and the Roman capitol letter, E, which, in London, is the date mark for the years 1800-1801.
