Folger-specific note
Folger copy 20 has, of the three title pages proper to this edition, that on the recto of the cancellans title leaf (+[superscript pi]A2). T.p. is closely trimmed and mounted, with the first two lines touched up with pen and ink. Wants leaf +[superscript pi]A1 (with, on the verso, the associated "verses" and the port. above them); supplied in facsim. Also wants [superscript pi]A3,4, [superscript pi]b⁶, 4B6, 4E2-4, [par.]A3.4, and [par.]G5,6. Damaged at the tail throughout, with many leaves patched or repaired with a reinforcing strip. Text is affected by damage at tail to 23 leaves (list on file). Many of the reinforcing strips cover text slightly or a catchword. Closely trimmed. Text is shaved at the outer margin of 15 pages (list on file). Other imperfections affect text on 20 leaves (list on file). Variant states and printings, as recorded by James G. McManaway, "New discoveries in the Third Folio," PBSA, v. 70, (1976), 469-80, and other such variations, are identified in file. Annotated throughout in an 18th-cent. hand once thought to be Alexander Pope's; see John Fitchett Marsh in Notes & Queries, Feb. 6 and 20 and Mar. 6, 1875. In the same hand, written on a slip or slips interleaved before or after 11 leaves (list on file), mutilated text is supplied.
